DRIVE ME AS FAR AS YOU CAN

DRIVE ME AS FAR AS YOU CAN

After his arrival in the place unkown to Number Six and his futile attempt to make a telephone call the pressing of a button on an electronic information desk leads to the instant appearance of a canopied taxi. The female asian driver addresses him, first in

English then, as he didn't respond quick enough, in French: "Où désirez-vous aller?" - "Whereto, Sir?" Number Six' reply: "Drive me to the nearest town." And upon realizing that this would be of no avail: "Drive me as far as you can." On the taxi ride Number Six is given a first impression. Some time later Number Two even takes him on a guided tour by helicopter, by car and by foot.

The taxi ride is an initiation. It is a crucial sequence, part of the general exposition, it's the introduction to the location of the action not only of the episode "Arrival" and it is fundamental to the entire series. It is also one first indication of the presence of circularity here: the congruency of the beginning and the end (driver: "Oh, we're only the local service."), that escape from this particular "time and space warp" would be very hard to achieve if ever be successful.

Most Portmeirion visitors during their stay at the annual PRISONER conventions realize with amazement that the Village in reality is so small. Whereas the helicopter flight with Number Two takes 90 seconds the on screen time of the taxi ride is only some 40 seconds long. But thanks to editing in inserts of Number Six' and the driver's faces it feels the narrated time is much longer. As a result viewers are inclined to believe the Village is

significantly larger than it actually is. There isn't much that we actually get to see during the taxi ride. No matter, sightseeing by taxi or helicopter, TV viewers are even less capable of conceiving the Village as such than the story's hero, its size and geographical position, apart from the fact that it's located by the sea ("the Sea") and surrounded by mountains ("the Mountains"). Those who have visited the place know: everything is within a walking distance. And the mysterious about it, what's hard to grab regarding the action as well as the audience reception is effected by strategies of elusion and obfuscation.
As a side aspect: The electrician who arrives at Number Six' home to fix the broken radio receiver uses a small tractor vehicle. He tells Number Six that when in a hurry they'd be walking. Paradoxe Villageois.

Now, let's take a look at the taxi ride itself that Number Six is given. Click the image to enlarge!

THIS ISN'T THE KIND OF MAP NUMBER SIX GETS IN THE VILLAGE SHOP
BUT THE REAL PORTMEIRION TOPOGRAPHICAL LAYOUT

The electronic information desk is located in a recess next to the Village's main street opposite the Café (which, in turn, finds itself somewhere else in different episodes). "Labour Exchange" is just around the corner, Number Six will see the office later on.

1. A wooden, coloured stagecoach had been standing in this recess for years. It can clearly be seen in the background. Around the early 1990s it must have been removed due to its poor condition. The bell tower can also be seen.
2. Same spot, Number Six about to get in the taxi.
3. Now the taxi is seen driving down the combined footpath/steps between the Round House aka 6 Private building (left) and Lady's Lodge (right) which is prohibited in real life Portmeirion and further on in the direction of
4. Town Hall or Hercules Hall (background). When the Hercules Statue is reached this continuous shot comes to an end. Next we see only fleetingly an impression of
5. Unicorn, left in the direction of travel, a building set apart from the street by some 50 metres and behind an iron gate. According to first drafts it would have been the Number Two residence. In reality and contrary to its majestic appearance the house is a simple flat construction with its manorial frontage taking effect only from a distance. Everything is a matter of perspective.
6. shows the Statue of Hercules again and a portion of Town Hall, this time shot from a different angle. One more tracking shot and we can see
7. the Pantheon or the Green Dome where there is the Number Two residence at the end of the small paved lane. It's the very same path we've already been driving at on 4. just the other way round.
8. Reaching the end of the trip the taxi stops in front of Lady's Lodge where the Village store's premises are. Here Number Six attempts to learn more about the Village surroundings by looking at a map.
9. We are now on Battery Square. Behind the taxi driver, seen from reverse angle, some of the rock base beneath the Pantheon is visible.
10. shows Number Six standing next to the taxi and in front of what formerly used to be garages, Prior's Lodging. On the right:
11. The whole set of buildings can be seen better on this shot: Lady's Lodge is on the right and in it the Village store. On the left the bay door of the PRISONER shop. In the series the entrance door to 6 Private was behind the arch. Nowadays this door is out of use. It remains still unsaid here through this image that and how closely located Number Six' home and the Village store in reality are. And also, that standing in front of the Green Dome door one would almost be able to spit on the roof of 6 Private.

During the helicopter flight guided by Number Two viewers and Number Six receive actually rather impressions than information on the Village. "Town Hall" and the Café as well are shown and named explicitely. Mention is made of the "Citizen's Advice Bureau" rather vaguely.
