VILLAGE DAY

"Village Day" bricht an.

VILLAGE DAY entstand wirklich in meiner knappen freizeit.

VILLAGE DAY

This is the title of a self-produced film by David A. Stimpson based on the action and characters from the series THE PRISONER. The film is approximately 76 minutes long.

Contents: A man with no name, played by David Stimpson, receives a phone call from a woman called Janet. After which he boards an airplane to London in order to search for the missing person they had spoken about.
In a
prisoneresque sequence the man then gets into the missing's Lotus Super Seven and drives into a London underground car park, walks down a long dark corridor and into

an office which he finds empty. Later in a pub he has a drink and shows a photo of the missing person to the waitress. He drives away but suddenly loses control and falls unconscious, the car gets stuck in the roadside ditch. He regains consciousness in a place well known to audiences as the Village from the series THE PRISONER.

The man with no name makes first attempts at exploring the place so new to him just like it was done in the forerunner series. He is summoned to a person called Number Two who upon leaving salutes "Be seeing you!" There is an unpleasant encounter with an eerie white balloon monster. And he is told by inhabitants in colourful clothing that "Village Day" was just

around the corner, an important appreciation day. Whenever he shows the photograph of the missing to somebody he either gets the reply "Questions are a burden to others. Answers a prison for oneself" or else that the face on the photo looked like the old Number Six. But that he had not been seen for quite a long time. Then he also meets the New Number Two.

It's "Village Day". Number Two holds a speech reminding the crowd of the meaning and importance of that day. A figure dressed as a clown unveils the bust of an honorary citizen displaying the face of the former Number Six (from the series).

Our protagonist, meanwhile addressed "Number Six" by other Villagers, emotionally excited declares that the person shown as a bust was by no means the founder of the community but his brother. He is told that "he's here and always will be with us". The man now known as "Number Six" runs away in panic. He darts into a room where moving images of Number Six are displayed on a big screen. He finds a body lying covered under white cloth, so he thinks he's found his brother. When he lifts the cloth he's horrified to see that the face is his own, the eyes covered with coins. And the body rises...

Our protagonist awakes in a hospital room with no orientation and heavy injuries covering his skin. The nurse tells him he's had

a car accident. A woman, perhaps his wife, arrives. She is told that the man suffered from amnesia and the most important thing he needed was "complete rest". The woman replies she already knew the perfect place for him to recover. The last images show the couple in a car driving their the way up to a road sign reading "italianate village".

This final gag needs explanation. Because the film was made in 1998 and the road sign has gone in the meantime. It's that the sign for years indicated the direction to Portmeirion, the Village of THE PRISONER.

David Stimpson calls himself a "life time fan and Prisonerologist". He belonged to a group of people organising the PRISONER-conventions in Portmeirion and he also took part in theatrical re-enactments. Seeing him as and perfom Number Six is amazing. On the internet he has his own blog.

LARRY HALL' RESOLUTION

Few people only have seen VILLAGE DAY. It was realised by fans after a long period of preparations and combined troubles. There may be digital copies around but they haven't been authorised. Also, the image quality is poor for having been lifted from analogue VHS tapes with every flaw on it.

The film was made with the participation of some 60 people, many of them SIX OF ONE members before, during and after the 1998 PRISONER convention. There has been citicism of the film, either cautious or acid, by PRISONER fans and scholars. But David Stimpson himself being principal actor, script writer, director and producer, all in one, is proud of it. Really. And he has reasons to be. Arguably an ambitious project by those of SIX OF ONE. However, hardly anyone was experienced in film making. There were no professional actors involved something that was required by PolyGram Inc. the former holders of the rights to the series. It turned out that several persons could not be relied upon, they withdrew from it, and that some of the promised technical equipment could not be obtained. So eventually Stimpson found himself forced to take charge of the entire production. Something he was unable to cope with, not only in terms of money.

The film's major and obvious flaws being the neglect of the fundamental principle according to which films must be edited, mounted; an abundance of long shots resulting in too long a runing time; poor interior sets as well as bad sound quality due to missing external microphones. All these shortcomings, on the other hand, are balanced by atmospheric shots of the Portmeirion location and, of course, the excellent knowledge of the original series.

VILLAGE DAY must be appreciated not despite its flaws but because of them. It's the committment and dedication, the love that's gone into it, that can be sensed at any moment of its duration. This is something that most of your everyday films won't have. What's also good about it is its twist ending nod towards THE TWILIGHT ZONE helping to enhance the meandering storyline.

David Stimpson would like to edit the film again and create his own personal director's cut. Will he be successful one day?

In a personal statement David Stimpson writes about VILLAGE DAY:

When I was first asked by Dave Barrie about the idea of SIX OF ONE making a film based on THE PRISONER I was delighted to have been asked because I was to take on the role as Number Six. So all I thought I would have to do was wait for someone to write the script, then I would learn my lines and that would be that. Never when the suggestion about making a film was first made to me, did I think I would end up producing it myself.

VILLAGE DAY was both my first film and last film for SIX OF ONE, and if I’m absolutely honest I found it rather daunting. However I was able to draw upon my experience of having produced a large number of PRISONER re-enactments for Conventions, along with the use of my organisational skills.

I learned a great deal from producing VILLAGE DAY, about the pitfalls of film making, and of human nature, while at the same time gaining a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction. And I was proud at the time, yes proud to be producing a film for a society of which I was a staunch member.

As for the film itself, well it has its faults, I shall not list them. It has it’s critics, yet it’s fans also. It was a very ambitious project, perhaps too ambitious when I think back. But I think it was worth it. Although I have to say that by the time the film was actually edited together, I was happy that it was all over. Because afterwards I felt a sense of relief, I felt both physically and mentally drained by the experience. Because all through the film’s production I was in a full-time job working 12 hours a day, sometimes seven days a week. So really VILLAGE DAY was produced in what little spare time I had, and I suppose given all the circumstances it was lucky to have ever been made at all.
