VERFAULTE KOHLKÖPFE
ROTTEN CABBAGES
In
some place, at some time, all of you held positions of a secret nature and
had knowledge that was invaluable to an enemy. Like me, you are here to
have that knowledge protected or extracted. Unlike me, many of you have
accepted the situation of your imprisonment and will die here like rotten
cabbages! The rest of you have gone over to the side of our keepers. Which
is which? How many of each? Who's standing beside you now? I intend to discover
'who are the prisoners' and 'who are the warders?' I shall be running for
office in this 'election.'

Number
Six' "rotten cabbages" speech from the seminal episode "Free For All" has been preserved
only partly in the German version and is featured in short clips in episodes
8 and 12 according to the German chronology.
In
some place, at some time, all of you held positions of a secret nature and
had knowledge that was invaluable to an enemy.
The speech is held after Number Six' decision to run for office of the position of Number
Two. However, the German audience did know nothing about that in 1969, at the time of the initial broadcast and also years later - no German version was created.
