THE PRISONER ended prematurely in 1968, but its cult mystique remains. Behind the show’s trendy surface sheen of Sgt Pepper-ish psychedelia, McGoohan took great pains to make it as timeless as possible, a dark fairytale with allegorical resonance. Half a century later, this uncanny journey through the looking glass still has prophetic lessons for us about politics, technology, social conformity and television itself.

STEPHEN DALTON
SIX WAYS CULT SHOW
THE PRISONER PREPARED US FOR THE MODERN WORLD

http://www.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/features/prisoner-patrick-mcgoohan-50

Any political messages in THE PRISONER are tangled and murky, but the show arguably resonates more deeply today than 50 years ago. ... McGoohan wrote the series finale "Fall Out" in a matter of days, a strikingly Brechtian allegory full of unanswered questions and cryptic clues that enraged some viewers.

http://www.evolver.at/stories/ Die_Sprechblase_The_Prisoner_Patrick_McGoohan_20150220/

HANS SCHMID
DIE WELT IST EIN DORF

http://www.heise.de/tp/artikel/27/27718/1.html (14.04.2008)

... Eine zweite Chance gab es nicht. Keine dreifache Informationsvergabe in THE PRISONER.

Used far more extensively than just on the credits, the typeface appears on props and signs throughout the series. It represents the Village as much as the sets, the costumes or the characters. ... The Albertus typeface crops up in all manner of applications from John Carpenter films to the street signage used in the City of London.

ALISTAIR HALL
ALBERTUS AND THE PRISONER

http://www.creativereview.co.uk/cr-blog/2015/march/albertus-and-the-prisoner/

Alistair Hall ist der chef des Londoner grafikstudios "We made this".

But it was also a vital part of creating the visual world of the 1960s TV show, THE PRISONER, appearing throughout the series in range of subtley tweaked versions. ...

We’ve not been able to find any direct statements from the McGoohan or any of the other creators of the show about why Albertus was chosen. It has a strong flavour to it, which will have helped to define the Village as somewhere out of the ordinary, and perhaps its duality fits well with the feeling of the setting as somewhere both old and new. ... But we should perhaps look a bit closer at the way Albertus was used within the show. As with all things in THE PRISONER, first appearances can be deceptive. ...

Regardless of any inconsistencies though, THE PRISONER is a fantastic example of using typography as a key part of the creation of a fictional world.

There’s a corollary truth to the Mystery Box idea, never discussed but frequently proven: Whatever’s inside that box could be disappointing. Maybe it’s definitely disappointing. Maybe there’s nothing in there at all. That can be a problem, if you build your whole story around the idea of opening up that box.

DARREN FRANICH
HOW THE PRISONER EXPLAINS THE LEFTOVERS. FREEDOM IS A MYTH. THE MYSTERY BOX IS EMPTY. SO, WHAT NOW?

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/12/07/how-prisoner-explains-leftovers

Franich erinnert nun an Patrick McGoohans NUMMER 6.

THE PRISONER can be hard to watch today. If you go to the show expecting some element of LOST-ian serialization, you will be disappointed and angrily confused. With one notable exception, plot stuff doesn’t really carry over from one episode to the next. It’s not even clear what order you’re supposed to watch the episodes in... There isn’t really any other ready example of this high level of actor-writer-director auteurism in the history of TV drama...

In a moment of triumph, Number Six gets to make a speech. The implication - textual, subtextual, metatextual - is that he will get to make a final statement on his purpose - and that McGoohan himself will somehow sum up everything that THE PRISONER was supposed to be. ...

Does that work sans context? Does it help if I tell you that that scene makes no obvious narrative sense, but that it’s also the most tragic moment in the whole show - maybe the single most soul-destroying thing you’ll ever see in a series finale? There's a way of watching "Fall Out" as a kind of savage deconstruction of everything you thought THE PRISONER was about. Number Six was supposed to be the rebel against the system. Now, the system absorbs him, even welcomes him. It's all very Matrix Reloaded, but less ponderous, more humane, and much sadder.

"Freedom," [McGoohan] says, "is a myth." That might sound depressing. Maybe it is; maybe we should all get depressed sometimes. The irony of THE PRISONER is that the characters are eternally imprisoned, but the show feels free as a bird. McGoohan and his collaborators takes every advantage of television as a unique form. Episodes don’t “build” toward some long-running story. Instead, each episode is a riff on the same simple concept - Number Six, Number Two, Village - and the riffs get wilder.

We want information…information…information. Circa 1967, that line vibed as “secrets,” the kind of thing spies fight over. In 2017, that statement sounds like the narcotic demand of the modern content addict, injecting fresh blessed information through the feedholes of social media. McGoohan refuses to give

DARREN FRANICH
THE PRISONER IS 50 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN NEVER MORE RELATABLE

http://ew.com/tv/2017/09/29/the-prisoner-50/

up his blessed information, but the Village promises him they will get it, by hook or by crook. And so every episode of The Prisoner follows that essential loop, the attempt to break McGoohan. ...
There are 17 episodes. They are weird, wild, druggy, trippy, clever, sorrowful, goofy, gorgeous. Through it all there is McGoohan, who somehow becomes less knowable as the series progresses. The incredible final episode is talk-y and speech-y, was written by McGoohan and directed by McGoohan and features McGoohan stepping onstage to offer some kind of final summation. It’s one of the great indulgent acts of TV authorship, and it is strikingly oblique. We like to imagine ourselves as the hero of our stories, and so we relate naturally to the onscreen protagonists, to the rebels and the outsiders. But when you watch The Prisoner, you realize that the real mystery is the man in the title. Who is Number Six? We want to find out. We want information.

If you are one of the very few people reading this who never saw the original TV series of THE PRISONER starring Patrick McGoohan, you have been leading a deprived life. It’s a series that influenced countless writers and stands as one of the immortal high points of television drama. ... When AMC said it would be doing so, I did not have a warm feeling inside. I ignored

MIKE CANE
AMC'S : THE PROBLEM IS IN BILL GALLAGHER'S MIND

https://ebooktest.wordpress.com/2009/11/19/amcs-the-prisoner-the-problem-is-in-bill-gallaghers-mind/#more-3211

all the pre-show material they put on their website. I did, however, bite when they released the nine-minute trailer. ...

So what was the point? There was - and is - no point. To any of this! Things just come and go in this collection of bad typing masquerading as a script. And remember this above all: this was more or less written by one guy. Unlike the original, which used different writers who could add different things to the pot. No, this stew is all from one guy: Bill Gallagher! ...

If you haven’t watched this botch, this itch, this plague, do not. It will grow a tumor in your brain that you will not be able to remove without operating on yourself with a purging post such as this. There is so much that could have been done with a proper update of THE PRISONER. This one wasted all of that potential. God damn them all. God damn them all for every writer out there who would have done it properly and made it another bit of immortal television.

THE PRISONER is rooted in social discourses belonging to the 1960s era. Yet it is also highly relevant as a social commentary on conditions of life in the twenty-first century. This is a hybrid. ... According to this legend of THE PRISONER that McGoohan himself established, Number 6 embodies the obstinate individual who remains relentless in his quest to escape the confines of the mysterious

ALAN SHAPIRO
THE RELEVANCE OF THE PRISONER TO TODAY'S INFORMATION AND SURVEILLANCE SOCIETY

http://www.alan-shapiro.com/the-relevance-of-the-prisoner-to-todays-information-and-surveillance-society/

Village. We agree that this interpretation is one current that is running through the text of THE PRISONER, but we believe that a second current exists as well. ...

In contrast to the opposition between power and freedom articulated in liberal political theory, where freedom is generally considered abstractly as being the absence of external constraints imposed by the state or other large institutions/organizations, power for Foucault operates in and through everyday life practices, and the discovery of freedom is to be made in understanding how we have been manipulated in many of the most intimate areas of our personal existence, and how we can concretely and creatively transform that. ...

Foucault famously said: "As in judo, the best answer to an adversary maneuver is not to retreat, but to go along with it, turning it to one’s own advantage, as a resting point for the next phase." This is well symbolised in THE PRISONER in Number 6’s twice weekly judo-and-trampoline sports practice. ...

The Village is the ultimate in the indoctrination and subjection of the individual. The Establishment has taken over entirely. Individual freedom is dead. People no longer want to think for themselves, even if they are capable of doing so. The Prisoner of the title is the one man who is resisting. Or is he?

This series: (I) does not deal with Edwardian England; (2) is not a high-class soap opera; and (3) has been shown in America before (on CBS in 1968 and 1969, and then on indpendent stations in 1970-73). ... THE PRISONER is not the normal

commerical TV sludge; nor is it the typical public TV drama of manners. It is, according to University of Toronto English professor Stewart Niemeier, "television's first genuine work of art. ...

Using one's brain is essential with THE PRISONER. And though the symbolism can get heavy-handed at times the series is usually satisfying television because it can be so unsettling. And that's no small claim for the medium that produced KOJAK and CHARLIE'S ANGELS.

Today, McLuhan's relevancy remains intact as the cultural and academic celebrity of the '60s and '70s. He was both a product of his time and recognized for theorizing on matters ahead of his time (although people did not always fathom his theories while

"THE WHOLE WORLD AS VILLAGE" A CHRONOTOPIC ANALYSIS OF MARSHALL McLUHAN'S "GLOBAL VILLAGE AND PATRICK McGOOHAN'S THE PRISONER

(2009)

Als beispiel kapitel 3, The PRISONER'S Village: "narrative structure", "allegory debate", "Utopia, Dystopia or anti-Utopia?", "bureaucracy as dictatorship", "the preservation of science and technology", "freedom as illusion", "the individual as opposition to the collective, "pathos", "Fall Out", "Utopia, Dystopia, anti-Utopia and the real world".

he was conjuring them up). A similar argument can be made about Patrick McGoohan and THE PRISONER. McGoohan and his television series remain relevant because they too were both a product of their time and are ahead of their time. Unlike the prodigious number of works published by and about McLuhan, few scholarly texts and articles exist on The Prisoner offering little insight into its themes which this thesis investigates. ...

Late in his life, McLuhan was often emotional about the future onslaught of surveillance satellites and computers that would result in mankind's loss of personal freedom and identity (Marchand, 1989, p. 250). THE PRISONER illustrates well McLuhan's predictions. Within the confines of the small Village, Villagers are subjected to a loss of personal freedom and privacy; their humanity has been diminished (as they have become mere numbers), their resistance has been compromised, and their psyches so weakened that conformity is inevitable and escape is futile. THE PRISONER suggests that it is impossible for the individual to flourish in a totalitarian regime. ...

If, in the 21st century, the planet becomes one big global village and our imprisonment within it has no physical boundaries, then the solution to understanding this village world rests in how we decode our environment. For McLuhan, the boundaries of the Matrix are to be exploded open by the artist and the dropout. For McGoohan, once we realize our own dual nature, our psyche can lead us to a total awareness. The success of both McLuhan's theories and THE PRISONER's impact remains a conundrum.

Television stories result from collective authorship and creation, and emerge under relatively stringent cultural constraints because of their status as corporate product, property and commodity and even more so as broadcast material. Therefore, individual programs necessarily navigate the limits of what is

AGENT + IMAGE: HOW THE TELEVISION IMAGE DESTABILIZES IDENTITY IN TV SPY SERIES

http://cmsw.mit.edu/how-the-television-image-estabilizes-identity-in-tv-spy-series/ (2007)

considered culturally acceptable to represent. ... Repetition, memory and return or the image in television's THE PRISONER (1967-1968)... describes the incongruity between the modern hero, with his method of modern action, and an emergent postmodern environment that is central to the 1967 spy TV series THE PRISONER, and it looks at how this conflict is communicated visually throughout the program. ...

In THE PRISONER, a modern hero must make sense of a landscape of discontinuities and repetitions that challenge his ability to act, react, move, and escape. In ALIAS, a postmodern heroine must master the art of changing selves in order to move across spaces that, like her own identity, are conditional and are never what they initially appear. In both series, the television image, freed from an obligation to represent only one thing while ruling out others and made multiple by the TV episode format, assumes a resonance over its duration that creates the conditions for the depiction of fluid and changeable spaces and characters. In both cases, the TV image repeated enables a paradigm shift where the depiction of a decentered protagonist, once exceptional, now becomes a normative subject on television.

Patrick McGoohan's stunning spy-fi series THE PRISONER only lasted 17 episodes before sadly disappearing in 1969. But its revolutionary mix of geopolitics, sci-fi and psychedelia has influenced not just television, but also music, comics, film and more. ... McGoohan’s show has deeply influenced contemporary

music as well. Artists as different as XTC, Luke Vibert, The Clash, Supergrass and more have borrowed its themes and iconography to make their musical cases. ...

McGoohan was also a determined idealist, who abhorred the creep of mass-marketing and surveillance technology so resolutely dissected in THE PRISONER. His popular spy series DANGER MAN found him early success, yet he would turn down the plum role of James Bond after Ian Fleming’s franchise caught fire in the early ’60s. McGoohan disliked Bond’s misogyny, and openly mocked the theatrics and violence of popular espionage, preferring instead to survive by his wits and creativity during DANGER MAN's run, which in the mid-’60s made him one of Britain’s highest-paid actors. Rather than wear out his secret agent welcome, McGoohan went metafictional, resigning from the show to go on holiday, in the form of a show about a secret agent who resigns to go on holiday, but is instead imprisoned in a panopticon disguised as a resort. That narrative innovation helped set the standard for the hyper-real television of today, and set about influencing the next generation of filmmakers, writers and thinkers. ...

From its subversive mind-wiping to the knotted allegory of "Fall Out," where Number One is perhaps unmasked as yet another cerebral phantom, THE PRISONER presaged recent sci-fi standouts as different as THE MATRIX and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. Those films arguably would not be the same without THE PRISONER‘s influence.
