DAS HOCHRAD
THE PENNYFARTHING

THE PENNYFARTHING

It can be found on badges, vehicles, telephones, even on food cans, everywhere - except, that is, on the daily newspaper, for whatever reason. Sometimes a real one appears on the scene, or can be seen standing in Number Two's office. One version has spokes the other hasn't. There isn't a real purpose to it within the series but it's ubiquitous: the canopied pennyfarthing. Roger Langley, McGoohan's biographer, writes that it was production designer Jack Shampan who created it while David Tomblin, McGoohan's co-producer, says it was Pat's creation. A mobile like this that would become part of the production design of a TV series. It proved an excellent feat. The pennyfarthing is the visual hallmark of the entire series THE PRISONER.

Elegantly the pennyfarthing blends the obvious futuristic features of some of the stories and their design with the retro-bound architectural appearance of the real Portmeirion location. The pennyfarthing at the same time is mobility and immobility and inertia. To McGoohan it is an "ironic symbol of progress" as Max Hora points out in his booklet "The Prisoner of Portmeirion", quoting Patrick McGoohan. Because progress, to McGoohan, was something moving too fast for modern-day people to be able to follow. And the canopy on top of it was a kind of a saftey belt, a sign indicating a tendency towards overprotection.

THE TYPEFACE USED IN THE PRISONER

In an animation of the closing credit sequence it is assembled out of parts to one complete piece with its wheels spinning round until they dissolve eventually. More...
