INDIFFERENZ

Let's do the time warp again...

Doch was bekommt man? Wohin? Nirgends, wirklich. Was man bisher für fraglos hielt, wird jetzt in frage gestellt. Allerdings: 'Fragen belasten die anderen' - also besser keine fragen stellen!

INDIFFERNECE

An aura of timelessness and out-of-the-place mood, or even absolute indetermination, is conveyed by very archictectural features of the real village's - Portmeirion's - doubtless alluring blend of styles which (speaking pointedly) won't just tolerate contradiction, resistance or any rebelliousness but make all of it useless from the start. Because everything, simultaneously, is equally valid (German: gleich-gültig).

We know from Orwell that there is no such thing as history or, which is the same meaning, that history is subject to constant changes and rewrites can and must be made any time if considered necessary. In this respect LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD never was, nor it will ever be and every day is "another beautiful day". Alain Carrazé and Hélène Oswald write in their book "THE PRISONER - A Televisionary Masterpiece" (1990/1995): "All the episodes of THE PRISONER seem to take place in an eternal present and to tell an uncompromising cyclical story." As annouced by Village radio.

Let's do the time warp again...

When Number Six regards the Village map this tautological circle closes in for the first time. We speak of tautology if the answer to a question is explained only through itself: It means what it is; thus Number Six' response to the question regarding the work of art called "Escape" which he creates in the "Chimes Of Big

The man is called "Number Six", hardly "Prisoner". But that’s what he is. Prisoners usually have got numbers.

It's significant of the series that things are denominated according to what they are or what their purpose and property is. In English the name of the place is "the Village", just that: the translation of the German "dorf". Along with "The Village", "The Mountains", "The Sea", "The Café" and "(The) Prisoner" the name of "The Butler" is identical to his position, his function as a butler, a servant. Hence the Butler doesn't need to have a number, or else the number needs not to be used. More, without a (visible) number his importance is emphasised.

Everyone of us wants and is used to explanations the kind of: "what is that thing?" and "what’s the name of this?" The usual answer would be: "This is a… with..." and: "It’s called…" Any definition needs to be done by (verbally) referring to something different than the object itself. Thus, one cannot "explain" a rose the way Gertrud Stein once pointedly said, "a rose is a rose is a rose". French artist Rene Magritte hinted to the "treason of the images" by showing a picture of a smoking pipe [Wikipedia] with the caption: "Ceci ce n’est pas une pipe." - "This is not a pipe." And it isn’t. It it the image of a pipe. Obviously, that’s not the same thing.

The strategy of tautology as applied by the Village is obfuscation, in order to

conceal a) its real nature and b) location. Things are what they are, the difference between the signifier (the meaning: a pipe) and the signifcant (the one who/that points towards: the image of a pipe) is gone. What’s the name of the mountains? There’s none. They are THE MOUNTAINS. Nothing else, nothing more. The name of the café? It’s got none. Because it’s the only one it’s simply THE CAFE. THE VILLAGE? It’s just that. And it’s the only one for those in it. It’s intended to be their world.

Admittedly, this can be observed only once or less than a handful of times in the series. I wouldn’t maintain that this trait is very consistent all through THE PRISONER but arguably it is at work. Prominently seen in the map scene of "Arrival". This particular scene has always been and among my favourites. Try to be an innocent first-time viewer, you'd expect information and explanation from the map. But what do you get? A puzzle, a fake "solution" as an explanation which leaves you perplexed, stripping you off your certainties and throwing you back into - nothing, really. Everything you thought was doubtless is questioned. But 'Questions are a burden to others', so don't ask! No one's going to give you a true answer. The vicious circle, which THE PRISONER is one too, closes in again.

Ben" episode. And this, too, would have been Patrick McGoohan's standard reply to journalists questioning him about elements of the series and what it was all about.

In another scene Number Six angrily smashes his radio receiver and leaves his home, walks through the Village and is swept off his feet when he encounters the gardener he had met as the repairman only a couple of minutes before. Or has he? - You can't really catch it - the hidden layer of the whole show.

TOBIAS BECKER: CIRCULAR REALITY (GERMAN LANGUAGE)

The villagers' salutation - "Be Seeing You!" - is an empty ritual; their gesticulation pointing to eternal recurrence, circularity, self-contained as the Village or the series' cyclical structure itself. The wheels of the canopied Pennyfarthing (which, according to McGoohan, is an "ironic symbol of prograss") keep spinning at the

end of each episode to no avail. A real one can be seen at times standing around. However, with the contorted moebius tape the distinction between inside and outside has gone away. The world as the Village.
