ALEXIS KANNER 1942 - 2003

ZUSAMMEN IN PORTMEIRION

CONVENTION 2011: KANNERS LETZTES INTERVIEW 2003 MIT MERLINA WATERWORTH;

KINGS AND DESPERATE MEN

Was ist so besonderes daran, fragen Sie?

ALEXIS KANNER IN DEMASKIERUNG

Alexis Kanner (2. Mai 1942 in Bagnères-de-Luchon, France - 13.

Meine Reiserfahrung möchte also kurz in diese Worte fassen:
Thanks for the trip, Dad!

ALEXIS KANNER 1942 - 2003

By Michael Brüne

I don't want to make more out of my visit at Alexis Kanner's grave than what it really is: Honouring a departed human. Alexis Kanner managed to touch the hearts of many people very differently. He was part of that unique PRISONER TV-tale that still keeps us fascinated and makes people think. Merlina Waterworth who interviewed Alexis for the last time in 2003 is certainly right in saying that my visit on the mount of olives is also a symbolic gesture for me, a German, going to a reputable jew who together with his family was forced to escape from France when the Nazis came upon them. That I, as a Christian, would pay my last respect to a jew in Jerusalem.

MEETING IN PORTMEIRION

It's been at the 2011 PortmeiriCon that I first met Ori and Nora S. from Israel. SIX OF ONE founder Dave Barrie, in a talk, had mentioned that Alexis Kanner after his death in 2003 was returned to Israel and buried in Jerusalem. Ori and Nora agreed to do a research for the location of his grave. Their search was successful. They found the last resting place of the unforgotten actor who played the "Kid" and also the Hippie on the mount of olives in Jerusalem. It is this particular place opposite Temple Mount where pious jews await the arrival of the Messiah on Judgment Day. Only those jewish believers prominent

and renowned are entitled to receive their last resting place on that spot. And the price to be paid by the families is extremely high. One year later during a pilgrimage that took me to Israel for one week I had the opportunity of visiting Alexis Kanner's burial place.

SHALOM - PEACE -
FROM THE CITY OF PIECE: JERUSALEM!

Our programme was tight and I'm fulfilled with lots of multifaceted impressions. Our German group was traveling through Jerusalem and Galilee in the blazing sun and at a temperature of more than 30 degrees. It was amazing to experience the sunrise at the Sea of Galilee at 5.30 am and to enjoy a refreshing swim in the lake.
On Monday 14th May in the afternoon I had an appointment with Ori in Jerusalem. He took me with his car to the mount of olives. His wife Nora sadly was tied up with business. On the mount of olives we met a security escort who guided us to the grave of Alexis Kanner. It's placed in a large area of sarcophagi. This jewish graveyard is located at the hillside of the mount of olives opposite of the jewish temple sanctuary on which by now the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aksa Mosque of the Muslimes are standing.
On a jewish graveyard as well as inside a synagogue jewish men are obliged to wear a headpiece. Ori was wearing his kippa and he was dressed with his Prisoner-T-Shirt. My head was covered

with a white cap which I was always wearing on the journey as a sunblind. I didn’t have my Prisoner-T-Shirt with me in Israel...

Without any Hebrew knowledge nobody of us would be able to find and identify Alexis’ grave. The escort showed us the grave and left us alone as long as we wished. And he was also kind and helpful to take some photos and filming clips at the tomb.
Ori and me started our little ceremony at Alexis - Rabbi Chaim Yeshaia Kanners - tomb. Ori read the Hebrew grave inscription and I read the English translation:

Here is buried
The dear and beloved man
The gentle soul and noble spirit
Rabbi Chaim Yeshaia Kanner, blessed is his memory
Son of our mentor and Rabbi
Rabbi Pinchas Joseph Halevy, blessed is his memory
Grandson of the righteous ones, the holy ones
Of Sanz, Shinwa, Kosow, Shpitovka and the "Basht" (he of good name)
May their rights protect us
14 of the month of Kislev, year 5764
May his soul be bound up in the bundle of the living

The escort was filming us while we were reading the grave inscription. And he too made some nice photos of us standing together at the tomb. Ori assumes, that the denotation "Rabbi" within Alexis’ name is a title of honour. But it seems that his father Rabbi Pinchas Joseph Halevy was a real religious rabbi with the jews. Anyway the family Kanner is well honoured in Israel. They belong to the Chassidic movement in their religion. Why the forename Alexis is missing on the grave inscription Ori didn't know. Unfortunately nobody could give more detailed information about Alexis Kanner and his family. Last year Ori was searching about ten different funeral parlours to eventually locate the grave.

"HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD"

Our ceremony continued with reading the prophecy of Ezekiel 37,1-14 which was the biblical base for the Hippie’s "Dry Bones" (or else "Dem Bones") song in "Fall Out". Ori read it in the original Hebrew and I read it in English and German. Everyone of us made a silent prayer at Alexis grave. And with big thanks in our hearts we mentioned the energetic and charismatic actor who fascinated lots of Prisoner fans worldwide. It was a moving moment to stand at his final resting place and to realise again with sadness that he has left us too early. But as Ori said, his spirit is alive and free by now and we are happy with him in his eternal living.
Together we enjoyed the view from this most exclusive place in the world. I gave Alexis a final salute of honour in the name of all of us - the SIX OF ONE team and the German Prisoner friends. And before leaving I put six stones on his tomb, as this is common practice among Jews. This act was also representative for all of Alexis friends who cannot come to his last resting place in Jerusalem.

CONVENTION 2011: KANNER'S LAST INTERVIEW 2003 WITH MERLINA WATERWORTH;
THE CURIOUS GOGGLES ARE A SUN PROTECTION AND KANNER
WAS VISIBLY STRUCK BY HIS ILLNESS

MEMORIES

After leaving the mount of olives Ori invited me for an evening meal in a jewish pub. I invited Ori and Nora to come to Germany. But Ori was a little reserved and told me that his family had had bad experiences with the Nazis. I didn't want to delve into this subject because old wounds would easily be reopened.
The little special pilgrimage within my Holy Land pilgrimage was very successful and also moving. I was delighted to meet Ori again - he may be the only PRISONER fan in Israel - and to visit Alexis Kanners final resting place together with him. In my mind an in my heart I commemorated the two personal meetings with Alexis in 1993 in London during the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Prisoner and during the 2003 Portmericon, only a few month before his sudden death.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT GRAVE IN JERUSALEM

The next day our German group visited the most important tomb of world history. We were standing inside Jesus Christ’s tomb which has been empty for nearly 2000 years. In the resurrection of the Messiah, Christians see the beginning of the fulfillment of the Ezekiel prophecy. And it was exactly this promise the Hippie No. 48 - Alexis Kanner - represented in such an impressive way in the Prisoner’s "Fall Out" finale, with his "Dry Bones" ('Dem Bones') song. At this meaningful place in the church of resurrection I was praying for Alexis and all the dead (in my heart) and I lit candles of hope: "Hear the word of the Lord!"

KINGS AND DESPERATE MEN

What makes it so damned special, you ask? Besides being thoroughly warped and uncommercial, it stars long-time fave Patrick McGoohan and the director/producer/co-writer (in addition to editing and photography, under the pseudonym Henry Lucas) was Pat's old pal from THE PRISONER, Alexis Kanner...

McGoohan stars as John Kingsley, a controversial Montreal radio talkshow host who is taken hostage in his high-rise studio on Xmas eve by a pair of novice terrorists (Alexis and Andrea Marcovicci), who wire the building with explosives and plan to go on the air live, in an attempt to get a local activist released from prison. But this isn't the beginning of some standard pot-boiler, because Kanner relies more on offbeat characterizations than simple plot grindings.

The head kidnapper is a professor turned social revolutionary ("I'm tired of teaching history," says Kanner. "I'd prefer to shape some of it myself."), and once entrenched in the secured studio, Patrick and Alexis battle it out with various psychological armaments until you're not sure who's really in control.

As the police surround the building with enough firepower to stop a small army, the broadcast becomes a public side-show, with McGoohan manipulating his nervous captor with his dry sly wit (while sucking down a bottle of gin) - listening to the rambling callers, conducting a mock-trial, forcing in commercials breaks against Kanner's orders, and even leaping on the creep, as this intricate, 'oh-so-perfect' plan slowly unravels before Alexis' bloodshot eyes...

All of this will probably be too slow and diffuse for most viewers (you know, the stupid ones), but this is a must see for McGoohan-watchers and fans of Lobster Cinema.

Kanner is edginess incarnate, while McGoohan is letter perfect as the dynamic Kingsley. It's a flashy, playful role and Pat wades into it with obvious relish. I admit the film's a annoyingly long-winded at times, but it's also always intriguing and often downright brilliant. Oh yeah, in case you were wondering about the title, it's taken from a poem by John Donne: "Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men."

Steven Puchalski, author of "Slimetime: A Guide to Sleazy, Mindless Movies", 2002, and Shock Cinema

In short, I would express my experience with the Hippie's word:
"Thanks for the trip, Dad!"
Michael Brüne (May 2012)

Alexis Kanner (2nd May 1942 in Bagnères-de-Luchon, France - 13th December 2003 in London, England) was a French-born Anglo Canadian actor, most notable for appearing in the ground-breaking TV series THE PRSIONER.

He was born in Nazi-occupied Bagnères-de-Luchon, France. In April 1944, shortly before his second birthday, his family escaped with him to Montreal, Canada on a Portuguese ship. Kanner made his first impression as an actor in the role of Alex, among a French Canadian cast, in the television drama series Beau Temps, Mauvais Temps (1955–1958). He moved to England in the late 50s to join the Birmingham Repertory Theatre to further his acting career.

He appeared as Detective Constable Matt Stone in 9 episodes of SOFTLY, SOFTLY  (BBC 1966), a spin-off series from Z-CARS. He claimed in interviews later that he left not wanting to be typecast. Only one complete SOFTLY, SOFTLY episode featuring Kanner survives in the BBC archives, 'A-Z', and another partially.

Patrick McGoohan, impressed with Kanner's acting skills, cast Kanner as the psychopathic 'Kid' / Number Eight in the episode "Living in Harmony". This led to further appearances in "The Girl Who Was Death" and the final episode "Fall Out", all as different characters. He portrayed the rebellious 'Number 48' in "Fall Out", a role in which the

dialogue was either asuccession of short lines in response to other short lines or sung. Kanner also gave an uncredited performance as the photographer in "The Girl Who Was Death", in which he performed a number of stunts on a roller coaster.

He starred in a little known short feature film called TWENTY NINE in 1969 as Graham Baird in a story of a promiscuous young husband's night out in swinging London. It was only 26 minutes long and co-starred Yootha Joyce. This was shown as the B film in Britain to the feature film IF. He moved back to Canada and his next film was MAHONEY'S ESTATE (aka MAHONEY'S LAST STAND, 1972) with Sam Waterston and Maud Adams, which he also co-wrote and co-directed.

He worked again with Patrick McGoohan on the Canadian hostage drama film KINGS AND DESPERATE MEN in which he starred as well as writing, producing and directing. He apparently spent two years editing the film which, although filmed in December 1977, did not premiere until the 1981 Montreal World Film Festival. During the late 80s Kanner sued the producers of the film Die Hard claiming that they stole the idea for that movie from this film (he lost).
