LOST HIGHWAY GEFUNDEN
LOST HIGHWAY FOUND

SIX-OF-ONE-mitglied Simon Rutherford."

LOST HIGHWAY FOUND

One of the big question marks surrounding the production of THE PRISONER for decades has been the exact location of that deserted highway, road or runway in the opening sequence with KAR120C and its driver heading straight on towards our faces.

In the past the English M1, still under construction, it is said, was a hot candidate. In fact this turned out to be wrong because at the time of shooting in 1966 the M1 was already in use.

In the britmovie.co.uk forum photos were published, taken from YouTube and Google as well, that show quite clearly that former RAF airbase at Podington, Northamptonshire, called "Santa Pod" was the real shooting location. This runway is used nowadays as a racetrack. Sadly, the forum thread is no longer available. But there are other sources* confirming the Podington theory.

Roger Langley, SIX OF ONE team member, on the other hand, contends that not Santa Pod was the location but Bovingdon Airfield:

"The most likely location used for the opening shots in The Prisoner is Bovingdon airfield, west of Watford, Hertfordshire. The series was produced at Borehamwood and other contenders were Elstree Aerodrome, Hatfield Aerodrome and Radlett airfield. There is more at: www.dacorumheritage.org.uk/ww2-bovingdon.htm. Also, Santa Pod raceway has been put forward, but at 60 miles away, is less likely than Bovingdon, where filming regularly took place 20 miles away. Thanks to past Six of One member Simon Rutherford

Thank to Michael Kimpel for supplying this information.
