"FRAGEN BELASTEN DIE ANDEREN, ANTWORTEN
MACHEN EINEN UNFREI"
"QUESTIONS ARE A BURDEN TO OTHERS,
ANSWERS A PRISON TO ONESELF"

JOHN SHARPE ALS NUMMER ZWEI IN DER EPISODE "A CHANGE OF MIND"

"QUESTIONS ARE A BURDEN TO OTHERS,
ANSWERS A PRISON TO ONESELF"

Placards showing the face of the beloved leader adorn the walls in George Orwell's novel "1984" and every child has to learn certain axioms by heart which cannot be questioned or disputed and which provide the basis and reason for any situation of life or action.

JOHN SHARPE AS NUMBER TWO IN THE EPISODE "A CHANGE OF MIND"

It isn't by chance that THE PRISONER employs the same method of tutelage. The little distinction being that here there is always an amount of irony in the Village axioms that is absent in the Orwell text. The axiom above is the most familiar in the series:" Questions are a burden to thers, answers a prison for oneself." . At times it is quoted by the characters. Others can be found on posters in the Village: "A still tongue makes a happy life."

As with the Orwellian state there is the Village radio soothing the public mind by means of pleasant background music, making rainy weather forecasts, in turn, sound like propaganda. Or delivering announcements like the famous one on the day of Number Six' arrival when "for your pleasure" icecream is on sale, "the flavour of the day is strawberry."

It's in this context that the blue-and-white canopied Village signposts that can be found everywhere have their function. Literally and figuratively it's the direction to be taken what they show, "The Café", "Labour Exchange" or the "Old People's Home" etc. But one of them, it seems, stands does apart.

GUILLAUME GRANIER: THE IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE

And it appears that the Village has something to say regarding music. Indeed, music is central to the episode "Hammer Into Anvil."

"Music makes a quit mind."
"Music says it all."
"Music begins where words leave off."

In this episode Number Two is duped by Number Six into believing in an supposed secret message in a music piece by George Bizet. More about music in THE PRISONER...

Thanks to Patrick Ducher of Le RÔdeur.
