Wieso, weshalb, warum? Lesen Sie hier: MEHR: VILLAGE-COMPUTER
PUSH AND FIND OUT In 1966, the year when the PRISONER was shot, information at the push of a button was largely deemed to be a science fiction thing (for those born late enough: what's that, the internet?). However, THE PRISONER is permeated by the importance of knowledge and information for either side. Thus, in the first episode, after his arrival in the Village, Number Six on his walkabout finds an automatic information desk: "Push and find out!" But it isn't exactly information he gets, a - surprise! - real taxi appears and picks him up for a ride through the location. This information stand, which can be seen in "Arrival" and "Free For All", hard to believe, by was no means a well-crafted creation by the props department. Those infomats were actually in use on American and British airports and train stations around 1963 and later and known as Directomat. And perhaps as the devices proved to be too inflexible when there was need to expand the destinations and general information displayed on them they got out of use. As SIX OF ONE's Karen Langley writes, the infostand from the series isn't listed on any prop sheet. It can therefore be assumed that it was included into the production at short notice. After all it was transported to Portmeirion and prepared, reshaped for the shooting, a map of the (fictitious) village and a couple of picture postcards were attached to it. It really makes an illustrative impression on viewers and like a device one could really use, modern and functional but in no way futuristic. But one major change was also made. Remarkable, because there is no "7" on any key on the keyboard! As for the why and wherefore read this article: MORE: VILLAGE COMPUTERS |
