27 MILES FROM HOME

What actually happened after the violent shoot-out of "Fall Out", that extraordinary final episode of something we call a TV series, and the launching of a rocket, the evacuation and the final destruction of the Village? Could that be? The cyclical nature of THE PRISONER would tell us: no. But we cannot be sure.

Well, easy enough, isn't it. Number Six, Number 48 and the former Number Two are on the run and end up in that mobile home, the same cell used in the previous episode "Once Upon A Time", which is mounted on a mobile truck. The truck is set in

motion and makes its way through a disused railway tunnel. All of a sudden we see it driving on a dual carriageway which appears to be in Great Britain. And then there's the signpost telling us: A20 London 27. Which, of course, does nothing less than making us think the Village of Number Six' captivity would be located right next to the British capital!

But is it? Mind you, in other episodes the Village was said to be either at the Baltic Sea, near the Polish border ("The Chimes Of Big Ben"), or southwest of Portugal and Spain, near the Moroccan coast ("Many Happy Returns"). The latter hint at its geographical position being especially intriguing because Number Six himself had gone on a search mission in which he actually found the place. But the very moment he recognised his find he was subsequently ejected from the aircraft and returned to where he had come from. It can be surmised that the aircraft pilot was actually working for the Village and that Number Six, although in charge of the search route and equipped with a compass, was in fact deluded: Be seeing you! It is a clear conception, the location of the Village isn't meant to be rationalised.

A20 London 27. The geographical features, however, of both the Village and London or south England do not support the insinuation of the Village being located in that very area. The Village, after all, is a seaside resort, surrounded by high alpine mountains while the south of England is primarily flat (aside from the chalk rocks) and the coastline still a considerable distance away.

JUMP CUT FROM THE TWILIGHT ZONE

It's a mind game, for sure. One can try to explore and bring into accordance how it could happen that the truck all of a sudden is only a few miles away from London, and - as it may seem - the Village, too, is just around the corner! The editing of the scenes is very fast, even volatile and could be said elliptical. But nothing here urges us to believe that there's a real continuity of the action from the moment of the cavern shootings until the truck exits the tunnel and reaches British soil. So, let's take that jump-cut...

NUMBER SIX NEURALYZED
INTO OBLIVION?

Imagine the three escapee were "conditioned" - nothing uncommon in the series - and their memories of the recent past wiped out or "neuralyzed" as the process was called in the MEN IN BLACK films. We cannot honestly say how the process of making them forget their journey and the events before it was achieved. But thinking of how Number Six - when he was interrogated by the Council Chamber of "Free For All" - was so quickly subjected to that hypnotising blue light may be a hint towards how they managed to do it and how quickly it was done. Also, in "Once Upon A Time", in the Embryo Room, a very similar, potentially hypnotising blue light emanates somehwere from the ceiling and both Number Two and the Butler wear special glasses whereas Number Six doesn't. The ideal moment for the erasing treatment would seem to be when the truck enters the tunnel. In fact, the truck had been provided, hadn't it.

The three would've been put to sleep, the container/cell covered, possibly sealed and most likely shipped on board whichever port of departure. The truck would be driven under a diplomatic label, so no customs officer would be allowed to inspect it. Later, before we see them on the A20, they would be reanimated or woken up. Thus, we still don't know where the Village really is, do we.

Why the dancing to the rhythm of the song "Dry Bones"? They wouldn't remember that hours, perhaps days had passed, only experience their successful escape. Certainly, there would be joy but their state of mind would be the result of the hypnotising effects on them, the feeling of lightheadedness and serenity about their escape from the prison without walls. The scenes from "Fall Out" would seem to underline that.

CALCULATED RETURN

And the Butler? The Butler is the fourth person of the group to escape from the Village. But can he be called an escapee? He drives the truck out of the Village and through the tunnel implying that the accelerator, the clutch and the brake pedals must have been adjusted beforehand to his stunted physical growth. Arguably, he has a good deal of insight into the structures that constitute the Village system. And he always seems to follow some plan. But the Butler role still remains an enigmatric one, the same way it was before in the series. He is a (literal) key figure. No real clue is given until the end as to whether he joins Number Six out of his free will or whether perhaps it's his assignment.

All this leaves us with the question, or the fact rather, that this prison break must have been foreseen and arranged by the Village powers or the government behind it, especially as on their route state borders and customs barriers had to be bypassed. Even more so as the Village had already granted Number Six his return home, also money, the key to his house as well as his car. Could it be they'd let him leave the Village on a helicopter, simply and without any "credible" complications? There can be doubt about it. They corrected their mistake, it would seem.

MENTAL MANIFESTATION?

At the beginning and repeatedly in most of the credit sequences the individual we're about to know as "Number Six" strides down a long and dark corridor. Could it be, the tunnel apparently leading to the A20 is actually that corridor, either literally or metaphorically, a "wormhole" at the opposite end of which resurrection from the Twilight Zone that the Village is, back to London and back to reality which, however, isn't the same as as it was before?

Looking at THE PRISONER as a whole it can be taken for granted that the Village is actually a solid, physical reality. The main character is abducted to that place, that's where he lives and breathes. And also there's an infrastructure of some sort etc However, as soon as we enter the final episode "Fall Out", as viewers we enter a different level because now this episode is completely different from the previous ones. "Fall Out" as we see it does nothing in terms of "explaining" - who, where, why - or resolution. It can be guessed that Patrick McGoohan didn't care about plot holes, he deliberately wanted to leave it unresolved, all the more as his approach is both allegorical and symbolic with the elliptical narrative mode of dropping rationalisations supporting his intentions.

NAMES AND NUMBERS: NUMBER SIX - PRISONER?
THE VILLAGE - WHERE IS IT?

Certain elements about "Fall Out" as well as of the "Dance Of The Dead" episode, the scene on the beach in the twilight, appear to support the thesis that the Village is a mental manifestation, perhaps part of our unconscious self. Thus, it could have hardly been destroyed or left by escape. whereever one went the Village would be with you. And this, it seems, is what McGoohan himself and final images of THE PRISONER are telling us. Every man has a Village of his own, his own prison.
