Dort in besagtem "maulwurfsguck" rief mich Euan Cooper-Willis an.

Danke!

PRISONER OF THE SHOP

A TRIBUTE AND THANK YOU TO EUAN COOPER-WILLIS AND SUSAN COOPER-WILLIS

By Max Hora

After SIX OF ONE’s convention at the village in August 1982, Euan (1921 - 2015) and Susan Cooper-Willis (1918 - 2007) [Sir Clough Williams-Ellis' daughter; ed.] allowed me to put a display of PRISONER-related items, including my Penny-Farthing bicycle, in the window of the shop underneath The Arches cottage. This shop was called Y Dewin (Welsh for "The Magician") at the time and later became an ice cream parlour. It is now the bookshop. After arranging the

window display at Portmeirion I returned to SOF ONE’s home town (where it all began), Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. The society's founder David Barrie lived in a basement flat called "Mole View" near the town centre and that is where I was living that summer while looking for a permanent residence.

It was at "Mole View" during the last week of August 1982 that I received a telephone call from Mr Cooper-Willis who told me that he and his wife were happy for me to open a Prisoner Shop at Portmeirion if I wished to do so and that I could start the next weekend. So it was on the evening of Friday, 3 September 1982, that Dave Barrie and I put various Prisoner-related items into his car and drove up to Portmeirion to open the first-ever shop devoted to The Prisoner TV series. On the Saturday morning we put all the stock into the Y Dewin shop and opened for business. Euan and Susan arrived later that day to see how we were getting on and the following week I had a meeting with Susan’s mother, Lady Amabel Williams-Ellis (widow of Sir Clough), who was staying in ‘The Angel’ cottage at the time.

Also staying in the village during early September of that year were Bob Geldof and Paula Yates* who came into my shop one day to have a look around. I kept the shop open until late October when Portmeirion closed for the winter break. Before I left the village, Euan and Susan said that I could return to Portmeirion when it re-opened in the spring of 1983 and they had more good news for me regarding the location of The Prisoner Shop. They told me that a decision had been made to move the gardening shop from The Round House (Number Six’s residence in The Prisoner) to the nursery along the driveway. This meant that I could open The PRISONER Shop in its proper "home from home" when I returned to the village the following year.

So, that is how Patrick McGoohan’s Village home in The Prisoner TV series became The Prisoner Shop at Portmeirion in April 1983.

I moved elsewhere after running the shop for 16 years and the Portmeirion management have operated the business since the spring of 1999. I'm very grateful to Mr Cooper-Willis for that H telephone call to "Mole View" all those years ago. He and his wife made it possible for me to turn my "PRISONER hobby" into my full-time job, enabling me to have many interesting and enjoyable years living and working in Sir Clough Williams-Ellis’ beautiful village. I am very fortunate to have "5 had that unique Portmeirion experience. Very few people are lucky enough to be able to turn a dream into a reality. Because of Euan and Susan’s kindness and foresight, I was able to fulfil my dream. Thank you!
