NUMMER 6 NICHT DER GEFANGENE
NUMBER SIX NOT THE PRISONER

Nummer 6? Patrick McGoohan?

NUMBER SIX NOT THE PRISONER

It is a paradoxical statement, as it would seem, Number Six not being the Prisoner. Is it just pettifoggery or does it have any substantial value?

From the German perspective, though, it must be said that foreign language titles like the original PRISONER, the French LE PRISONNIER, IL PRIGIONERO in Italian, the Spanish EL PRISIONERO they all go according to the same pattern while the German name of the show is NUMMER 6.

The series here wasn't called the way the dictionary would suggest: DER GEFANGENE - meaning: the captive, the prisoner. Is the German version playing hard to put things straight? Let's take closer look from the etymological point of view:

1. The liguistic root of "The prisoner" is prison which in old French is prisoun = "jailhouse, pen, ward"; this is taken from the past participle of the verb prendre - pris its origin being the Latin verb prehendere = "take, grip, seize".

2. Almost a synonym, "The captive" is from the Latin adjective captivus belonging to the verb capere meaning = "take, seize, grip" as well as "bound" and "proper".

3. "Der gefangene" or "gefangener" are from the past participle of the German verb "fangen" (old high German "fahan") = "seize, catch" where the original meaning is "fach" = "compartment, shelf, case" and also "to put together, bind". The German noun is Gefängnis = "prison".

The English title, thus, is speaking of a prisoner, not just a captive, someone held in a jail but one without visible walls. Number Six could be called a captive would he be prevented from leaving some place. Linguistically no distinction in this respect is made in German.

NUMBER 6 - NOT THE PRISONER (GERMAN)

an attempt at exploring why the German series title is NUMMER 6 instead of THE PRISONER. Likewise, the question which term might have chosen for the word Prisoner as an insert at the end of the "Fall Out" episode: Gefangener? Nummer 6? Patrick McGoohan?
